Virginia-based defense contractor General Dynamics has agreed to purchase Westford-based wireless communications company Fortress Technologies.
Fortress has provided secure wireless networking capabilities to members of the U.S. military since it was founded in 1995. The technology allows combat soldiers to communicate internationally from the battlefield.
The company has about 70 employees and is slated to become a part of General Dynamics' C4 Systems Division, which is based in Arizona, pending regulatory approval.
"We see this as a growth move for both companies," said Robert Doolittle, a spokesperson for General Dynamics.
Perfect Pairings
One of the driving factors behind General Dynamics' decision to purchase Fortress was the complementary technologies that the two companies share, Doolittle said. General Dynamics' C4 division specializes in creating wireless networks, while Fortress specializes in the hardware that is used to access those networks.
The two companies have worked together in the past, Doolittle said. Specifically, Fortress and C4 Systems were part of a group of government contractors that helped create various aspects of the U.S. military's communications platform.
General Dynamics' purchase of the company should come as no surprise given its recent history. Since 1997, General Dynamics has purchased more than 50 companies while growing its revenues from $4 billion to $32 billion. Its employee count has increased from 29,000 workers to more than 90,000 today.
General Dynamics provides a range of services for the military, but specializes in making military land, air and sea vehicles.
The primary consumer of both General Dynamics and Fortress Technologies products is the military.
Financial terms of the deal were not released, but it is expected to close in the third quarter of the year.
