Manufacturing company Kopin elected director James Brewington as its new chairman of the board, replacing company founder John Fan, who served as chairman since the company’s founding nearly 40 years ago and who retired as the president and CEO in 2022.

Fan will continue to serve on Kopin's board of directors.

The move was announced on Thursday following the May 25 annual meeting of stockholders, according to Kopin press release.

Brewington has served on the Kopin board of directors since 2006. He retired in 2007 from New Jersey telecommunications firm Lucent Technologies, where he last served as president of developing markets. He began his career at AT&T in 1968.

Fan served as the company’s chairman since the company’s founding in 1984. He has authored more than 200 publications, edited three books, and has more than 70 patents, according to the press release. Following Fan’s planned retirement, Michael Murray on Sept. 6 became Kopin’s CEO, joining the firm from Ultra Electronics Group, a British defense and security company, where he was president of the cyber business.

Westborough-based Kopin develops and manufactures display and optical technologies to the defense, industrial, and consumer products industries. The company reported $47.4 million in revenue in 2022 and trades on the NASDAQ with a market cap of $232.3 million, according to Yahoo Finance as of Monday morning.
