Westborough firm begins $33M Mississippi Air Force project

NORESCO, a Westborough energy efficiency and infrastructure firm, has begun work on a solar-power system at a U.S. Air Force base in Mississippi as part of a larger efficiency project.

NORESCO said Friday it has begun construction on a solar panel array mounted above a 500-space parking lot at the base in Bixoli, Miss. It will generate more than 2 million kilowatt-hours of power annually, offsetting part of the base’s energy consumption.

The company’s $32.7-million contract with Keesler Air Force Base is aimed at reducing the base’s energy consumption by 16% annually. Other energy-saving measures at the base will include new efficient lighting fixtures, and upgrades at the chiller plant and energy management control systems.

Keesler chose to install the solar panels at a highly visible spot near the base’s entrance and will display at a lobby kiosk how much the system is reducing greenhouse gases.

NORESCO, which says it is one of the largest energy services companies in the country, has an energy efficiency contract at three U.S. Navy military bases in Japan and has conducted work more locally at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford.
