Avery Dennison has announced it will be working with smart products company EVRYTHNG to create smart clothing and apparel that is connected to the Internet from day one and allow customers and companies to interact through the individual identity of the clothing.

The Westborough clothing and apparel company that produces products for fashion brands around the world will create data profiles for at least 10 billion pieces of clothing and footwear as part of the deal, according to Avery Dennison Retail Branding and Information Solutions. The identity will be embedded in a unique code that can be read by smart phones. Information contained with these identities can be updated throughout the life of the product, providing opportunities for increased interaction with customers in addition to having supply chain applications.

Consumers will be able to use these identities to interact with brands through smartphone applications. This can include reordering a favorite pair of running sneakers once they reach the end of their life, finding out where to recycle them or exploring a fitness program through a smartphone application linked to the apparel.

The unique identification of the products is useful to retail stores. A product that carries data about where and when it was purchased cannot fraudulently be returned, according to Avery Dennison.

The financial details of the deal were not revealed by either company.
