Massachusetts is the second-healthiest state in the nation, according to America's Health Rankings, which issues an annual report on measures of health across the country.
Among the state's strengths are its low level of uninsured residents and relatively low rates of obesity and infant mortality.
Massachusetts also has the most primary care physicians per residents of any state.
However, the state ranked 39th on a measure of binge drinking, 36th for preventable hospitalizations and 34th for violent crime.
The study found that over the past five years, the percentage of children living in poverty rose from 10.1 percent to 16.7 percent, while the percentage of residents that smoke dropped from 18.5 percent to 14.9 percent. Over the past decade, the percent of residents that are obese rose from 10.1 percent to 21.8 percent.
