AIM Filing Cape Wind Appeal
The Associated Industries of Massachusetts is filing an appeal today with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court contesting the recent approval of a power-purchase agreement between National Grid and Cape Wind.
The state Department of Public Utilities agreed to the deal last month, but AIM argues that it will unfairly raise the cost of power for National Grid customers.
The agreement was the first of its kind approved under the Green Communities Act, which allows for long-term renewable energy contracts. National Grid promised to buy half of the 130-turbine wind farm's output for 15 years, with energy prices starting at 18.7 cents per kilowatt hour and rising 3.5 percent each year.
AIM says the deal could actually be more costly than that to ratepayers, who would have to make up any shortfall if tax credits are reduced.
