Harrington Hospital of Southbridge is planning a $9- to $10-million dollar expansion of the emergency department at the Hubbard Hospital site in Webster.

Harrington took over the administration of the troubled Hubbard Regional Hospital in 2009 and now runs it as Harrington HeathCare at Hubbard. Today it announced it will extend its agreement with Hubbard for another eight years, with the possibility of an additional 10-year extension after that.

The original three-year agreement would have expired next year.

The emergency department at Hubbard is a five-bed, 3,000-square-foot facility. Harrington plans to increase that to 10 beds and 10,000 square feet. It's in the process of raising $9 million to $10 million for the project.

"We believe this is a permanent, long-term commitment," said Harrington CEO Ed Moore. "It's only a matter now of finding a few million dollars."

The announcement was attended by U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield, as well as several state representatives, including newly elected Rep. Peter Durant, R-Spencer.

Neal praised Harrington HealthCare for its commitment to providing medical care locally and told a gathered crowd of doctors, EMTs and hospital staff that the budget fight in Washington over cuts to Medicare and other programs could have negative results for Harrington, which receives 60 percent of its revenues from Medicare and Medicaid.

"The reason Mom and Dad are not living in your attic is because of social security and Medicare," Neal said.
