As of 2007, Massachusetts had the third largest percentage of people online, with 76.3 percent of residents using the Internet from work, home or another location, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Residents of New Hampshire were the most likely Internet users, at 82.6 percent, while Mississippi had the lowest rate, 52.8 percent.

Nationally, between 1997 and 2007, the percentage of households using the Internet at home jumped from 18 percent to 62 percent. Of those using the Internet in 2007, 82 percent had high-speed connections, while 17 percent were still on dial-up.

Education had a big impact on Internet use, with 87 percent of people 25 and older with bachelors’ degrees going online compared with only 49 percent of those with only a high school diploma.
