WBJ captures 3 top industry awards

The Worcester Business Journal received three national honors in this year’s Editorial Excellence awards contest sponsored by the Alliance of Area Business Publications (AABP), a business media industry trade group.

For the second straight year, the WBJ was honored for best newspaper among small local business-to-business tabloids in the United States and Canada, this year capturing a second-place, or “silver” award, Last year, the WBJ received the third-place, or “bronze” award.

Also for the second straight year, the WBJ received silver for best overall design among small tabloids.

In addition, the publication received bronze for best editorial among all newspapers.

The three awards were among 108 that were handed out Saturday at the AABP’s annual summer conference, in Baltimore. The awards honored the work of many of its member newspapers and magazines – and their online media – from 2013.

Publisher and CEO Peter Stanton said “I am thrilled for our editorial and design teams who work so hard every week to maintain our high standards. To finish in the medals for a second year in a row in general excellence in our 25th year is something we’re all quite proud of.”

In citing the WBJ again as one of the best newspapers, the contest judges commended it for “paying close attention to industries that shape the (Central Massachusetts) economy, from higher education to health care, property development (and) banking and finance.

In addition, the judges said the WBJ “gives ample credit to small businesses, the job market, relevant national and state issues and individual community leaders.”

“In their evaluation, the judges keenly grasped the essence of our editorial mission. That means that what we do every day comes out clearly to people who are not as familiar with us as our readers are,” WBJ Editor Rick Saia said. “It’s beyond gratifying to be honored again for that. I’m grateful to the entire team for what they do every day to execute our editorial mission with great focus, enthusiasm and professionalism.”

For the design award, the judges cited the variety in the look of the front page, which shows “real thoughtfulness for big stories without overdoing the design. (And) a commitment to creativity in story formats is displayed in the strong use of infographics throughout.”

The award-winning editorial, “Transportation Priorities for Mass.,” appeared in the April 15, 2013 edition. It suggested four areas of agreement for legislative leaders and Gov. Deval Patrick for spending on roads, bridges and public transit to help spur economic growth. At the time the editorial was written, Patrick and legislative leaders were at odds on transportation spending priorities.

The judges said the suggestions in the editorial provided a path to areas of agreement “on a vital issue for businesses and citizens. It helps to find light where there is political chaos. It shows editorial leadership.”
