Wayland manufacturer, MGH file patent infringement suits

Wayland cosmetic laser manufacturer Candela Corp. has filed patent infringement complaint against 18 manufacturers and distributors across the globe with the U.S. International Trade Commission and in federal court.
According to Candela, its parent company Syneron Candela and Massachusetts General Hospital, the technology -- fractional RF micro-needles -- was invented by an MGH doctor Dieter Manstein, who was awarded a series of patents for the technology after filing for patent protection in 2004.
California-based Syneron Medical licensed the patents and developed the commercial product -- Profound -- and obtained U.S. Food & Drug Administration approval in September 2016. The company describes the device as a treatment clinically proven to treat facial wrinkles by stimulating the body’s own natural production of chemicals to encourage the building youthful looking skin.
“Subsequently, the accused companies all entered the market in the U.S. in violation of the patents, as alleged in the complaints,” the company said in a Monday statement.
Syneron Candela CEO Geoffrey Crouse said the suit seeks to block the importing and use of the alleged infringing devices in the U.S. and recoup damages for past infringement. The 18 companies named in the case are from location such as South Korea, Israel and California.
“Over the years, the company has invested heavily in developing Profound which we believe is the leading fractional RF microneedle system in the world, and we will not permit others to infringe our patent rights," Crouse said.
