Way Beyond Taking A Message

With the economy still languishing, plenty of companies have made "doing more with less" their catchphrase. But it's not always easy to figure out what that should really mean on the ground.

According to a new report by OfficeTeam and the International Association of Administrative Professionals, one key can be encouraging support staff to take on new responsibilities.

A survey by the two organizations found than 96 percent of administrative staff said they would find leadership training helpful, but 51 percent said their employers don't offer them such courses.

Sixty percent of the admins said they would like to help with event planning, and 53 percent said they want to help control costs and organize corporate social responsibility efforts.

When employers offer courses in areas like accounting, budgeting, purchasing and negotiating, eight in 10 support staff said they've taken them, and 94 percent of that group said the classes have helped them control costs on the job.
