Tuesday is the last day of business for a Walgreens location in Marlborough, amid a larger closing of pharmacies by the Illinois-based firm.
The Walgreens at 525 Boston Post Road East is shuttering as part of a wider closure of pharmacies across the country, with the firm closing eight other locations in Massachusetts over the next two months.
Walgreen’s other Marlborough location at 99 Granger Blvd. will remain open. Customers who received their prescriptions at the Boston Post Road East location will have their prescriptions transferred to the Granger Boulevard store.
“We will continue to execute our previously announced turnaround plan aimed at stabilizing the retail pharmacy, including our footprint optimization program,” Jennifer Cotto, senior specialist, media relations, issues management at Walgreens, wrote in an email to WBJ. “Increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs. When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”
Walgreens previously announced it will close 1,200 stores over three years, with this closure being part of that business strategy, wrote Cotto.
Walgreens has closed multiple Central Massachusetts locations since 2022. A former Worcester location is now being eyed for a Chick-fil-A restaurant, and a former Hudson location is now being partially converted into a Dunkin’ location, according to that firm’s website. The Hudson location had been sold to a North Reading developer and Dunkin’ franchisee for $2.7 million in 2022.
Construction of the 13,554-square-foot Walgreens at Boston Post Road in Marlborough was completed in 2006. Prior to that, a Mobile-brand gas station and convenience store had been located at the site.
With the closure of the Marlborough pharmacy, Walgreens has 32 locations remaining in Central Massachusetts, including three in Worcester.
