Jobs and payroll levels are up substantially across the United States in the ambulatory health services industry, which includes outpatient services, physician and dentist offices, and home health care and medical labs, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday.
Employment in the industry increased 15.1 percent, to 6.6 million, from 2007 to 2012, while annual payroll increased 24.3 percent, from $275 billion to $341 billion.
Census officials say physician practices accounted for nearly half of the growth in ambulatory health care receipts, which totaled $826 billion in 2012, up 23.5 percent from $668.5 billion in 2007.
According to the new data, part of the Census bureau's industry series, the number of home health care industry establishments rose nearly 31 percent from 2007 to 2012, and jobs in that industry were up by an equal percentage, to 1.28 million, in 2012.
