Six years after purchasing more than 200 acres of property bisected by the municipal border of Grafton and Shrewsbury, a developer has won approvals from both towns to construct a 845,000-square-foot distribution center for delivery company UPS at the site.

As part of the sixth public meeting on the topic, the Shrewsbury Planning Board voted on Dec. 5 to unanimously approve the plans, proposed by California real estate investment firm Prologis, Inc., to construct the 24-hour-a-day warehouse and distribution center at 50 Centennial Drive.

The two municipalities held a joint planning meeting in June to discuss the proposal, which saw some pushback from local residents, citing concerns about traffic and other impacts.

Plans for the site call for the construction of the warehouse along with 282 loading docks, 1,000+ employee parking spots, and more than 500 designated spaces for long and short trailers. The site will be able to sort 58,000 packages per hour, with similar sites in Utah and New Jersey involving more than 5,000 vehicle trips per day.

Work at the site is expected to begin in January, according to statements made during the meeting by Mark Donahue of Worcester-based law firm Fletcher Tilton, the attorney who represented Prologis for this proposal. Donahue noted Grafton had already signed off on the project.
