The towns of Shrewsbury and Grafton are set to hold a joint planning board meeting on June 10 to discuss a proposal to see a 845,500-square-foot United Parcel Service warehouse constructed on a parcel located on the border between the two towns.
The approximately 212-acre site, which has an address of 12 Centennial Blvd. for the portion in Grafton and 414-428 Cherry St. in Shrewsbury, is the proposed location of a distribution center for UPS, according to documents posted to the Town of Shrewsbury’s website on May 5.
The site is currently vacant, undeveloped wooded land; the proposal would see approximately 150 acres of the site developed.
The proposed warehouse use is allowed by right in Shrewsbury, as it is located in a limited-industrial zoning district, but requires a special permit from Grafton.
An entity associated with UPS first bought for $18 million the parcels linked with the proposal in 2018. The Seattle-based company plans on constructing a warehouse, along with two accessory buildings.
The proposal calls for the construction of 282 loading docks, 757 exterior trailer parking stalls, and 830 car parking stalls. The site is located less than a mile from the Grafton station on the Framingham/Worcester MBTA commuter rail line.
The site will operate 24 hours a day and is designed to accommodate the sorting of 58,000 packages per hour, according to a traffic study submitted as part of the application documents. Using data from similar sites in Utah and New Jersey, the traffic study estimates the facility will produce over 5,000 vehicle trips per weekday.
Mark Donahue of Worcester-based law firm Fletcher Tilton is representing UPS for this proposal.
The joint meeting to discuss the proposal will be held at 7 p.m on June 10 at the Richard D. Carney Municipal Office Building in Shrewsbury.
