Almost three months to the day after the United Way of South Central Massachusetts’ long-term executive director announced her retirement, the Southbridge-based human services nonprofit selected Kristin McCarthy as successor.
“I am excited to join United Way of South Central MA,” McCarthy said in the release. “I look forward to working alongside the board to further strengthen our impact and build upon the important work UWSCM has done for the communities of Charlton, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge, and Webster.”
McCarthy assumed her new role on Dec. 16, taking over for Mary O’Coin, who served as executive director for nine years and in September announced her plans to retire at the end of 2024.
McCarthy is tasked with managing the UWSCM’s day-to-day operations while spearheading fundraising and grantmaking efforts to ensure the organization’s financial vitality, according to a Dec. 26 press release.
She joins UWSCM after a 17-year tenure at Tri-Valley, Inc., a Dudley-based nonprofit agency providing human services to older adults and those with disabilities. She ended her time at Tri-Valley having most recently served as nutrition program director for eight years.
UWSCM was established in April 2020 following the merger of United Way of Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton and United Way of Webster and Dudley, according to UWSCM’s website. The nonprofit serves all five communities with a mission to improve the income, education, and health of their residents through funding local charities.
In 2023, UWSCM generated $1.02 million in revenue and had $1.07 million in assets, according to the nonprofit financial tracking service GuideStar.
