Even though the private sector added about 71,000 jobs last month, the unemployment rate remained at a steady 9.5 percent because there were nearly 200,000 fewer government workers employed in July.
The total labor force in the country declined by about 131,000 workers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are an estimated 14.6 million unemployed workers in the country. There are another 2.6 million marginally attached workers, or workers who do not have a job but are not counted as being unemployed because they've stopped looking for work.
Of the unemployed population, 6.6 million have been unemployed for more than 27 weeks.
The manufacturing sector posted job gains, adding 36,000 workers in July. Health care added 22,000. Professional and business services lost 13,000 workers and the construction sector lost 11,000 workers.
