UMass Research Grants Coming To Med School

The University of Massachusetts announced $200,000 in grant awards through its Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property Technology Development Fund.

Eight $25,000 awards were made to faculty members from the UMass system's Worcester, Amherst and Lowell campuses.

UMass Medical School researchers are involved in four of the eight awards. One medical school research program is using "nanoparticles" to regenerate tissue for the treatment of heart attacks. Another line of research is seeking to develop a biodegradable bandage for wounded skin regeneration.

The development fund was established in 2004 and has granted more than $1.3 million to university researchers.

• Xingwei Wang and Dr. Kurt Barringhaus, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UMass Lowell; Department of Medicine, UMass Worcester

• Gregory N. Tew, Polymer Science and Engineering, UMass Amherst

• Kevin Fu, Computer Science Department, UMass Amherst

• Jie Song, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopedics and Department of Cell Biology, UMass Worcester
