A UMass Memorial Medical Center patient was quarantined out of precaution after traveling from China, the Worcester hospital said Wednesday.

The patient was being quarantined first at home upon guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The patient was brought to UMass' University Campus on Friday for an unrelated and undisclosed illness, hospital spokeswoman Debora Spano said.

UMass isolated the patient because of the home quarantine, which expired at the end of the day Tuesday, Spano said. No symptoms were shown of coronavirus, she said.

The hospital created an alert for its medical staff in January in the event a patient has traveled to China or Southeast Asia and showed symptoms of coronavirus.

Massachusetts has had one confirmed case of coronavirus, a UMass Boston student. The United States has 53 cases as of Wednesday, according to the World Health Organization.
