UMass Medical School executive to depart

UMass Medical School’s executive vice chancellor for innovation and business development will depart the Worcester college next year.

Jim Glasheen led UMass Medical School’s innovation and business development enterprise since 2017, and his tenure included the creation of a new team at the school that oversees research, creates business strategies and leverages discoveries and scientific advances, the school said in announcing Glasheen’s pending departure on Aug. 13.

Glasheen’s tenure included increased licensing revenue from the school’s scientific discoveries. The UMass system was ranked fourth among all United States institutions and third among colleges in income from such licensing, according to the Association of University Technology Managers. UMass brought in approximately $146 million in fiscal 2018, with the medical school accounting for 99% of that tally, trailing only the University of California system, Northwestern University in Chicago, and the City of Hope Medical Center/Beckman Research Institute in California.

UMass Medical School said it has hired an executive search firm to find Glasheen’s successor. The school didn’t disclose if Glasheen has a next job lined up.
