Residence: Grafton
Average commute time: About an hour
Mode of commute: Car
For more than 25 years, Andrew Davidson has been driving about an hour to and from work each weekday.
That’s about 10 hours a week commuting, or more than 500 hours a year, and more than 12,500 hours sitting, driving in his car alone to and from work during the past quarter-century.
But Davidson doesn’t think about it that way.
When he gets on the highway outside of his home in Grafton, he puts his car in the middle lane of the highway and cruises at whatever speed the traffic is going that day.
On the way into work he plans out his day, thinks about tasks to accomplish and mentally prepares for work.
On the way home, he relaxes and de-stresses. Audio books, the radio and a cigar on a nice summer afternoon help.
“One advantage is, by the time I get home, work is long gone…” he said.
After 25 years, he’s used to it.
Davidson has pretty much always had a bad commute. He use to live in Worcester and would commute out to Newton, along the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate 128. Then he changed jobs to become CFO of Richard White Sons, a general contractor in Auburndale.
When he recently moved, Davidson wanted to live a little closer to the Pike, but still in the Central Massachusetts area. So he moved to Grafton, practically within sight of the highway.
He tried taking the commuter rail for a few years, but his schedule is unpredictable and sometimes he unexpectedly needs a car during the day, so it just didn’t work.
While in the winter his commute is longer because snow and ice can easily double his commuting time, he said the worst part about his drive to work has been the increased number of distracted drivers texting and chatting on the phone.
“You can tell,” he said. “When a car is swerving out of its lane or is almost in an accident, usually you drive by them and there they are: on their phone.”
