Residence: Cambridge
Average commute time: About two and a half hours
Mode of commute: Train and bus, bicycle or walking
Myrna Morales lives in Cambridge but works in Shrewsbury. And she doesn’t own a car.
So Morales is a faithful rider of the MBTA commuter rail each of the three days a week when she works in Shrewsbury.
When Morales learned in February that she was going to be commuting to Central Massachusetts, she was initially worried.
“There goes my life savings,” she remembers thinking, envisioning the need to buy a car or spend a lot of money commuting about 50 miles to Central Massachusetts on the days she doesn’t work in her organization’s Boston office.
Initially, Morales would take the one- hour-and-nine-minute train ride from Boston to Grafton, then wait for a Worcester Regional Transit Authority bus, which would drop her about a mile away from her work.
Some days she would wait five minutes for a bus, on others, it was up to a half an hour.
Then, she got a hand-me-down bike.
Now, Morales gets off in Grafton and rides her bike a half hour to 45 minutes to work in Shrewsbury.
“I look at it as my exercise,” she said.
