Robert Nolan is a biker who means business.
Nolan rides his bike to work about half of the working days in a year. Last year, he rode his bike to work 119 times. This year, he’s already done it more than 60 times.
“After a while, it just becomes part of who you are: I’m the guy who rides his bike to work,” said Nolan, who has been riding a bicycle to work for almost 30 years.
To bike to work almost 50 percent of the time means that Nolan is out on the road, on his bike of course, rain or shine, winter or summer.
Pretty much as long as the roads are clear and it’s not actively snowing or raining, he’ll ride his bike to work most days of the week.
He has his commute on his bike down to a science: He’s mapped out a 12.5-mile route that takes him on biker-friendly roads in Worcester, like Hamilton and Franklin Avenues to the back roads of Millbury on the way to and from his home in Westborough.
It takes him about an hour each way and once he gets to work he showers and changes into work attire.
For Nolan, riding the bike to work has a number of advantages. It saves money and mileage on his car. Secondly, it’s a two-hour workout every day. And thirdly, it’s become a way of life.
