Sutton, Primetals get $2.25M MassWorks grant for gas lines

England-based metal mill manufacturer Primetals and Sutton are receiving $2.25 million in assistance from the state to help fund natural gas lines for the company’s planned $28-million manufacturing facility in the town.
The 183,000-square-foot facility is planned for the South Sutton Commerce Park. Primetals, based in the U.K., has operations based in two rented locations in Worcester, but those will be consolidated and housed in Sutton once the new facility is built.
The state funding from MassWorks will provide 13,200 feet of natural gas lines for the company’s new building, which is expected to bring 275 jobs to the town.
“At Primetals we believe manufacturing jobs can be an important part of the economic growth and stability of a community,” said Michael Elgredge, vice president of the company’s mini mills and long rolling division, in a statement. “Our search to relocate our manufacturing and office complex took us far and wide and we were fortunate to be able to select the Town of Sutton to keep our jobs in Massachusetts. The grant from MassWorks to add a natural gas line to the infrastructure of South Sutton Industrial Park was an important aspect in our decision,”
Primetals announced in March the company is building the facility on vacant land off of Route 146. The company negotiated a 15-year tax-increment-finance agreement with Sutton for the project to pay more than $820,000 in revenue to the town over the length of the agreement.
