YWCA has raised $4M for 57-year-old renovation

The YWCA of Central Massachusetts has surpassed the halfway point of its $7.5-million capital campaign to fund a $23.4-million renovation of the company’s Salem Square facility in Worcester.
The project would be the first major renovation of the building in its 57-year history. The YWCA has completed just one partial renovation since it opened its doors in 1961.
To date, the organization has raised $4.13 million, about 55 percent of the goal. Close to 200 private and corporate foundations and individual donors have supported the campaign thus far.
The largest gifts came from the George I. Alden Trust and the Stoddard Charitable Trust at $1 million each. Both trusts are based in Worcester.
Warner Fletcher, chariman of both foundations, said in a statement the YWCA has been one of the city’s most prominent social agencies for girls, women and families.
“In making their recent major commitments to this current renovation capital campaign effort, the trustees of both Alden and Stoddard felt that this project at this time was more important -- perhaps than ever before -- to Worcester, and therefore was truly worthy of our significant support,” he said in a statement.
“We have been awed by our donors’ support so far during the campaign, and now that the vast community is aware of the need, I am sure we will see similar impressive results,” said Sue Mailman, a tri-chair of the campaign, in a statement.
YWCA kicked off the campaign in June to raise about a third of the money needed for the project. The renovation will seek to correct problems with the building’s infrastructure, security improvements and optimizing current space in the 74,000-square-foot building.
