Survey Outlines Strengths, Weaknesses Of Worcester

A survey of more than 120 businesses and commercial property owners in Worcester found that the city's greatest strength is its location, while the most significant weakness is the dual tax rate.

Worcester Citizens for Business, a local business advocacy group, compiled the survey in March and analyzed the results with the help of the Clark University School of Business.

The questionnaire found that after location, the city's greatest assets are its access, the colleges located in the city, business incentives and the workforce.

Respondents said communication about business incentives and being able to qualify for those incentives are other major shortfalls of the city. Personal property taxes and public safety were other concerns that were raised.

Of the 107 businesses and 24 commercial property owners surveyed, more than half of them had between one and 20 employees and had been in business for longer than 20 years.
