Survey finds small-business owners optimistic
A recent survey of 250 small-business owners around the state pointed to an overall optimistic outlook for 2015.
The TD Bank Small Business Pulse Check found that 75 percent of the business owners surveyed are optimistic about their business opportunities this year, with 30 percent saying 2015 might become their best year yet.
The survey also found that while 83 percent of businesses in the eastern part of Massachusetts met or exceeded their revenue goals in 2014, only 76 percent of those in western part of the state did. The survey includes Worcester County as part of western Massachusetts, along with Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties.
Nearly twice as many ‒ 32 percent vs. 17 percent ‒ small business owners in eastern Massachusetts than in the western part of the state said they were being negatively impacted by the U.S. economy. Even so, 60 percent of the Massachusetts small business owners surveyed said they are expecting their revenue to increase in 2015.
As for this year’s top priority, 31 percent of small business owners said it was expanding their product or service offerings, followed by streamlining costs (19 percent) and hiring and retaining employees (15 percent).
The survey was conducted in March of businesses reporting annual revenue of $5 million or less and with 100 or fewer employees.
