Another indoor pickleball facility is set to open in Central Massachusetts, as PickleBall U in Sturbridge plans to open its doors in February.
The new 19,000-square-foot facility will be located in Sturbridge Plaza at 178 Main St. and will feature six indoor regulation-size pickleball courts. The facility will include a players’ lounge and a pro shop selling pickleball rackets and other equipment, according to a press release issued by the company on Thursday.
“We are excited to be bringing indoor pickleball to Sturbridge,” Scott Sargent, co-founder and general manager of PickleBall U, said in the press release. “This site, settled between Planet Fitness and AutoZone, was selected for its accessibility and prominent location in the Sturbridge community.”
In addition to open play, the facility will offer league play, tournaments, and intro clinics for new participants in the sport. Memberships are available on the company’s website, and the company is hiring for open positions at the facility, according to a job posting on LinkedIn.
PickleBall U is a member of the USA Pickleball, the national governing body for the fast-growing paddle-based sport. More than 48 million Americans played at least one game between March 2022 and 2023, according to the Illinois-based Association of Pickleball Players.
In addition to PickleBall U, other pickleball-oriented businesses are seeking to open in the Central Massachusetts area in 2024. RT. 12 Pickle in West Boylston is set to open on Jan. 25, and a 21-court space operated by Boston-based Bosse Sports plans on opening in the former Neiman Marcus department store at the Natick Mall sometime in the summer or fall.
