RT. 12 Pickle, an indoor pickleball facility located in West Boylston, will open its door for the first time on Jan. 25, providing Central Massachusetts residents an opportunity to participate in this fast-growing sport year round.
First announced in July, this eight-court indoor facility located in Wachusett Plaza at 184 West Boylston St. will be open seven days a week. It’s the first solely dedicated pickleball facility of its kind in Worcester County, according to a press release issued by the company on Tuesday.
“West Boylston and Worcester County have a growing base of businesses, colleges, and families who are looking for the amenities you would otherwise have to drive to in other areas,” Ben Minsk, president and founder of RT. 12 Pickle, said in the release. “We are looking forward to getting to know our neighbors here, and helping create a great community of pickleballers at RT. 12 Pickle when it opens.”
The facility plans to offer walk-in play, tournaments, leagues, and lessons. In addition to the eight courts, the 30,000-square-foot facility will include a pro shop featuring pickleball equipment and a concession stand, selling light snacks, beer, and hard seltzers.
RT. 12 Pickle has hired Glenn Rochon, a Professional Pickleball Registry certified instructor and former professional tennis coach, to serve as the company’s director of programs, according to the company’s website.
A sport played with paddles and designed to be lower impact and more accessible than similar sports like tennis, Pickleball has been steadily gaining popularity. The sport is the most rapidly growing in the country, with over 48 million Americans playing at least one game between March 2022 and 2023, according to the Illinois-based Association of Pickleball Players.
In addition to the West Boylston facility, a 21-court pickleball space operated by Boston-based Bosse Sports is expected to open during the summer or fall in the former Neiman Marcus department store location in the Natick Mall.
