Nichols College in Dudley has scored Massachusetts 45/100 on the latest iteration of the school’s biennial Massachusetts Women’s Leadership Index, which is overseen by the college’s Institute for Women’s Leadership.

This is an increase from 2019, when IWL scored Massachusett with a 40. In 2017 and 2015, Massachusetts scored 39 and 36, respectively.

Women, per IWL, comprise 51.5% of the state’s population, but make up 31% of the state legislature, 8% of corporate CEOs, 24% of board seats and 26% of nonprofit CEOs.

“This past year has seen layoffs, stalled careers, and stress for all workers, but more so for women,” said Jean Beaupre, associate professor of communication and marketing at Nichols and lead researcher on the Massachusetts Women Leadership Index.

On most metrics, Massachusetts was better in the national average in measurements such as corporate and nonprofits CEOs, legislators, and mayors. The state did trail the nation in percent of women who are corporate executive officers and nonprofit board members.

The 2021 MWLI found the gender wage gap in Massachusetts is 81%. This is on par with the national average, with the U.S. Department of Labor reporting in 2020 the gender wage gap is 82.3%.

The MWLI, per Nichols, looks at women’s representation in leadership across sectors and compares those rates to gender parity and national averages to calculate a composite score.
