Steward Out Of MHA

Steward Health Care, the private equity-backed parent company of Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, has left the Massachusetts Hospital Association.

In a statement, the MHA said it is "deeply disappointed" that the 10-hospital system has resigned from the association.

Steward, which is backed by New York private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, acquired the hospitals of the former Caritas Christi system, as well as several others, last year. MHA said the acquired hospitals had been longtime members of the association.

Steward could not be reached for comment this morning, but The Boston Globe reported that officials there said they quit because the company wanted to present a "single, coherent voice" on health care reform issues.
