Steward, labor union sign three-year contract

The 175 members of a healthcare workers’ union employed at Nashoba Valley Medical Center will see their wages increase as part of a new contract negotiated between the union and Steward Health Care System, the hospital’s parent company.

Members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East employed at Nashoba and seven other Steward hospital campuses voted overwhelmingly to ratify the new labor agreement on July 28. The agreement will be effective between Nov. 1, 2016 and Oct. 31, 2019 and covers approximately 5,000 service, clerical and technical health workers across seven hospitals.

The contract includes a 5.5-percent total across-the-board wage increase for union members over the course of the three years, preserves current health insurance coverage options, and continues Steward’s participation in a union training fund that provides free tuition to union members within Steward who want to advance their careers in the health field. The contract also establishes a compensation work group with members from the hospital and the union.

Other hospitals whose workers will be affected by the contract are:

-Carney Hospital, Dorchester

-Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton

-Norwood Hospital, Norwood

-St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Brighton

-Morton Hospital, Taunton

-Holy Family Hospital, Haverhill

-Holy Family Hospital, Methuen
