State’s Jobless Rate Falls Below 9%

Massachusetts’ unemployment rate dipped to 8.9 percent in October from 9.3 percent the previous month, the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development said.

The month-to-month decline was the state’s first since June 2007.

Overall, the state was down 900 jobs in October as the manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, financial activities and “other” sectors all lost jobs during the month.

The professional, scientific and business services sector added jobs along with education and health services, government and construction.

Massachusetts is down 101,500 jobs, or 3.1 percent, from a year ago.
