State officials announced two new rebate programs for financing of solar energy projects.
One is Commonwealth Solar II, which is for small home and business solar projects of less than five kilowatts. The $1 million per quarter in funding for that program comes from the state's Renewable Energy Trust, which is built up through a charge on each ratepayer's monthly bill.
The second program, Commonwealth Stimulus Solar, will use $8 million in stimulus funds for larger solar projects, up to 200 kilowatts in power.
Administration officials hope to also create a "solar credit" in early 2010 for projects larger than 200 kilowatts.
Commonwealth Solar has already allocated about 1,270 rebates for home, business and municipal solar projects, creating 22.3 megawatts of electricity, according to a press release from the state.
State officials expect solar installation to grow to more than 50 megawatts by the end of 2010, which is up from 3.5 megawatts in 2006.
