State Officials To Help ID Beetle Infestation

State environmental officials say reporting suspected infestation by Asian Longhorned Beetles could prevent damage to plants at nurseries, crops and maple sugar trees.

The state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs is urging residents and business owners to check trees for damage by the dreaded pests, which were first found in the region last August.

In upcoming weeks, state agriculture officials will hold meetings in Worcester, Wellesely and Dighton to demonstrate how to identify the signs of infestation.

The Worcester meeting is scheduled for March 28 at the Massachusetts Land Conservation Conference being held at Worcester Technical High School.

Adult beetles won’t emerge until summer, but looking for the tell-tale signs of infestation in spring can help contain the spread of the tree-eating horde.
