State Establishes Workplace Fraud Hotline

People who suspect fraud in the workplace in Massachusetts can now call a hotline or go online to report their suspicions, according to Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Suzanne M. Bump.

These tools are in response to Gov. Deval Patrick's executive order that established the Joint Task Force on the Underground Economy. It is headed by attorney Michael Bradley.

Examples of fraud include employers who improperly classify employees as independent contractors, the creation of separate businesses to avoid paying unemployment insurance premiums, businesses that don't carry the workers' compensation policies and any “off-the-book” schemes to conceal financial activities.

Fraud can be reported by calling the hot line at 1-877-96-LABOR (52267) or online at www.mass.gov/dol/labortaskforce .
