State elder affairs head to depart in January
Elder Affairs Secretary Alice Bonner, appointed to her position by Gov. Charlie Baker in 2015, plans to leave the administration next month to take a new job with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which focuses on on improving elder care delivery.
Though the Department of Elder Affairs is not cabinet level, Bonner's planned departure revealed Friday to administration staff in an email from Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders is the second significant turnover announcement made this week as Baker gears up for the start of his second term in January.
Sudders said Bonner's new job will also give her "greater flexibility to spend more time with her family." Sudders described Bonner as a "family caregiver."
"On a personal note, I will miss her advice, enthusiasm and support. She leaves a legacy of excellence and exemplary public service. It is my expectation that we will tap into her considerable talents and involvement in the future," Sudders wrote in the email to staff.
In the email, Sudders also credited Bonner with "positioning Massachusetts as an age friendly state" by leading initiatives like the Governor’s Council to Address Aging and developing the Massachusetts' Age Friendly State Plan.
Bonner's last day will be Jan. 18.
