Southbridge Hospital To Build Cancer Center

Harrington Memorial Hospital has partnered with a Florida radiation therapy company to construct a freestanding cancer center on the hospital's Southbridge campus.

Harrington Memorial will partner with Radiation Therapy Services Inc. (RTSI) of Fort Myers, Fla., to construct what it calls the first center of its kind between Worcester and Springfield. Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford recently opened a similar dedicated cancer center on its campus, in partnership with Boston-based Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham & Women's Hospital.

Not to be outdone, Harrington has also entered into an agreement with Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to offer radiology services from BIDMC radiologists, as well as remote imaging capability to BIDMC in Boston.

Harrington and RTSI plan to break ground on the new facility this spring, although municipal approvals have yet to be granted, the hospital said. If all goes according to plan, the facility is expected to open next spring.

The cancer center will offer cutting-edge radiation and chemotherapy treatments, as well as advanced diagnostic imaging technology, according to hospital officials. The project is part of an effort to bring Southbridge-area residents "Total Local Care," and to bring advanced medicine to the local communities.
