The term blog is a hybrid of the words web and log. In the early days of the Internet, blogs were like personal diaries. But today they are important tools to any complete social media strategy. There are a number of ways to set up a blog cheaply and quickly. One site that lets you establish a blog in minutes is Blogger.com.
What is it good for?
A blog is good for getting your story out there. The days of mainstream media controlling the story are over. Reporters now look to blogs for story tips. The biggest pitfall of a blog is that they can be very challenging to keep updated. Unless you're committed to posting at least once a week, you probably shouldn't bother.
How can it work for your business?
A good blog can be the central hub of a business's social media strategy. Any content posted to a blog can feed into other social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. It can also establish your business as a thought-leader and expert within your industry. A blog also enables you to add fresh content to your website, which in turn will increase search engine results.
Success story
On any given day, Chuck Hollis's blog for Hopkinton-based EMC gets about 5,000 visitors. Not bad for a blog devoted to what some consider a dry topic: IT. The prolific Hollis, who serves as the company's vice president of global marketing and chief technology officer, got his start as a blogger in 2006 and says the online journal of his tech-related thoughts has "turned into something quite amazing indeed."
"...When you get good at blogging, you can see how you've subtly shifted people's thinking," he said in an email to the Worcester Business Journal. "You'll see your ideas and themes come back to you in all sorts of interesting and unexpected ways."
As a seasoned blogger, Hollis says anyone contemplating a blog needs to find a topic that they're passionate about.
"Capture that passion in your blog and you'll likely be very successful," he said.
