Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operators, the town's municipal utility, will pilot a program made by a Newton company that aims to reduce energy usage by residents.
GroundPower, the Newton company, will install a scaled version of its interactive customer engagement system, or iCES, in Shrewsbury. The program allows town officials and residents to better monitor real-time energy use and provide systems to control energy use at peak times. The pilot program will include residential buildings and two of the town's schools.
The system is being used by seven municipal utility providers around the state and is being piloted at more than 400 homes and buildings.
The pilot program also includes a social media platform that allows customers to interact with each other and the utility company to exchange ideas about how to reduce energy use. The Shrewsbury electricity provider will use results of the pilot to determine how much energy savings can be realized if the program is fully adopted.
Some private utility companies are also investing in smart grid pilot programs, including one by NStar in Hopkinton.
