Saltus Press, a more than 100-year-old Worcester printing shop has closed, according to an employee at the company.
A person answering the phones at the company said the shop closed Thursday.
A former salesman at Saltus contacted by the WBJ said he was laid off on Monday.
Don Shortman, a Worcester printing consultant who has worked with Saltus for about the last seven years, said he heard earlier this week that the company closed.
"The economy is horrible, there's just not a lot of printing being done, so everyone is vying for a smaller piece of the pie," Shortman said.
Shortman said he heard that about 56 employees were laid off.
Ward McLaughlin, president of Fitchburg packaging and press company Boutwell, Owens and Co. Inc., said two Saltus employees contacted Boutwell looking for employment because they expected the shop to be closing.
"It's been a long-thriving business, it's gone through generations and to me it was always a strong entity," said McLaughlin, who is also chairman of the Printers Institute of New England, a printing trade group based in Southborough.
Francis Carroll, founder and president of the Small Business Service Bureau in Worcester, said, "I don't know what the exact problem was, but I know he's closed down. These are difficult times. We did a lot of business with them, and they're good, good people."
Carroll said, "The cost of doing business today is pretty high, and new taxes coming down the road aren't going to help. I'm very sorry to see that happen."
According to the company's web site, Saltus has been family owned and run since 1906. The company did design and delivery of printing products, including digital and direct mail. Divisions of Saltus, according to its web site, included Charles River Publishing, Overly and Comp Digital.
Phone calls to owner Scott Saltus have not been returned this week.
