DeLuca needs to okay release of conversations with FBI

A legislative committee investigating Sen. Louis DeLuca needs the Republican to waive his federal privacy rights before any tapes of his conversations with an undercover FBI agent can be released.

U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor says in a letter to the panel that his office will consider releasing documents, transcripts and audio recordings of the Woodbury senator if he gives his consent.

The committee must decide whether to recommend the full Senate punish DeLuca, who pleaded guilty in June to asking trash hauler James Galante to threaten his granddaughter's husband because he believed the man was abusing his granddaughter.

The committee is seeking the tapes as part of its investigation. They can recommend a reprimand, censure, expulsion or no action against DeLuca.
