RTA Transit Services Inc. and Paratransit Services Inc. of Worcester say $45,300 was stolen from their 317 Main St. WRTA pass sales outlet.
The company said the theft was discovered during a routine audit of parent company Professional Transit Management and its subsidiaries Aug. 15. PTM believes that the money was stolen between February and June of its 2008 fiscal year and between July 1 and Aug. 15 of its current fiscal year.
One Paratransit Services employee has been put on administrative leave as a result. The locks have been changed at 317 Main St. and the company's computer system is in lockdown, said Stephen O'Neil, WRTA administrator.
The company said its insurance policy will cover losses resulting from the theft and that the Worcester police department has been notified.
Paratransit Services arranges transportation for the elderly and disabled in Central Massachusetts.
