The Worcester birthplace and childhood home of Robert Goddard, who is known as the father of modern rocketry, has been sold to a multimedia and space nonprofit founder, Charles Slatkin, according to a Wednesday press release.

Slatkin is the president of multimedia nonprofit WOW Inc. and The Wonder Mission, a new organization focused on education about science and space exploration. Both are located in Worcester.

The Wonder Mission will work with other city organizations to determine the best ways to preserve and share Goddard’s former home, the announcement said.

The house, which is about 4,300 square feet and located at 1 Tallawanda Dr., was sold for $459,900 in a deal closed Dec. 3, according to the Worcester South District Registry of Deeds.

It was about to be sold as a rental property before Slatkin’s purchase, per the release.

Goddard, who launched the world’s first liquid propulsion rocket in the 1920s, was born in the house in 1882, according to the Goddard Memorial Association’s website. His wife tried to give the house to both Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Clark University, but neither school accepted it, so it was put on the market and bought by a family friend, Kathryn McNamee. McNamee’s son, John, was the owner who sold the house to Slatkin last week.
