Retail Hiring Down In April

Retail hiring fell in April, partly as a result of higher than normal hiring during an exceptionally warm February, according to the Kronos Retail Labor Index published by Chelmsford-based Kronos Inc.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. retailers that Kronos samples made 31,862 hires in April, down from 33,209 in March. The numbers have fallen in both March and April, but only after rising nearly 11 percent in February to their highest level since October 2008.

The firm’s Retail Labor Index, which compares applications to hiring, fell slightly to 3.8 percent from March to April. That level remained higher than the index has stood for most of the last few years.
