Worcester-based packaging company Rand-Whitney has broken ground on a 384,000-square-foot packaging facility.
The new facility is the company’s largest investment in equipment and capacity aimed at addressing an increased demand for packaging, according to a Friday press release from New Hampshire construction firm PROCON, which is designing and building the facility. PROCON previously worked on Rand-Whitney’s facilities in Worcester, Dover, N.H., and Pawtucket, R.I.
Once operational, the Boylston facility will be able to manufacture 300 million boxes annually.
“We are excited to break ground on the construction of what will be a world class facility to help us meet the fast-growing demand for packaging,” said Nick Smith, president and CEO of Rand-Whitney, in a statement. “Boylston is a great location with an amazing work force, and we are happy to continue to invest in manufacturing in Massachusetts where it all began for us some 75 years ago.”
The Boylston Planning Board in September approved a project, proposed by Watertown design firm VHB, at 160 Shrewsbury St. for two buildings totaling 680,000 square feet. The second building, which was proposed as 307,000 square feet, was still looking for a tenant at the time of the planning board approval.
Rand-Whitney is the largest independent cardboard packaging manufacturer in New England. It is owned by New England Patriots’ Owner Robert Kraft, whose firm The Kraft Group bought an industrial complex in Northbridge for almost $20 million last month.
The Kraft Group also owns several other packaging firms, including UN1F1ED² Global Packaging Group, New-Indy Container Corporation, and International Forest Products LLC.
