(Updated on 2/12/15 at 9:23 a.m.) This story has been updated to reflect two additional stores that will remain open in the area that were not listed in the original story.
RadioShack plans to close all but four of its Central Massachusetts stores as part of the electronics retailer's bankruptcy protection.
The RadioShack stores in Ashland, Milford, Southbridge, and Worcester's Webster Square Shopping Center are the only ones in the region set to be spared in the company’s seeking of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which was filed Feb. 5, according to company information. These stores will stay open through an agreement with Sprint to create a “store within a store” with Sprint employees selling mobile phones and plans, according to a release from the company. This model will take place in up to 1,750 stores that will be acquired by General Wireless Inc.
"These steps are the culmination of a thorough process intended to drive maximum value for our stakeholders," Joe Magnacca, RadioShack's chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The company’s remaining “underperforming” stores will be closed, according to RadioShack. The stores in Gardner, two in Leominster, Marlborough, Northbridge, Sudbury, Warren, Webster, Westborough, and three in Worcester were included on a list of 1,784 stores that the company plans to close by March 31.
The store closures will be broken down into three tiers, with 162 stores closing by Feb. 17, 986 by Feb. 28 and 636 by March 31. The complete list of stores is available on a dedicated page at the RadioShack website.
