Quinsigamond Community College hopes to open a downtown Worcester facility as large as 70,000 square feet by next year, according to QCC President Gail Carberry.
The to-be-determined location would house the college's health programs as well as its Training and Education center, which offers non-credit, workforce training options for job seekers and career changers.
The center was housed downtown on Front Street, but recently moved to a temporary May Street location behind Temple Emanuel.
Carberry said QCC's workforce programming has grown by more than 50 percent in the past five years, creating the need for a bigger facility.
"We're very physically space-strapped here," she said.
The college has submitted a request to the state's public building construction division for permission to go out to bid to find a location.
Carberry said the project would involve a "significant investment" in furniture, fixtures and equipment.
The college has been expanding in recent years, opening a 10,000-square-foot campus in Southbridge and another location at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough. QCC has also been exploring potential locations in the Blackstone Valley.
"Our goal is to meet people where they are," Carberry said.
