Quinsigamond Community College President Luis Pedraja will remain with the Worcester institution after his candidacy to be president at the College of Marin in California ended without him getting the job.
The College of Marin named Pedraja as one of three finalists to replace Superintendent and President David Wain Coon upon his retirement at the end of 2023. Pedraja told WBJ he looked into the job because the job would give him a chance to be closer to family in California.
“When opportunity knocks, sometimes you have to explore that opportunity,” Pedraja said. “I did and discovered it was not a good fit for me.”
On Thursday, the College of Marin announced it chose an internal candidate, Vice President and Assistant Superintendent Jonathan Eldridge, to take on the top role at the college.
“There is still work to be done at QCC,” Pedraja said. “I am committed to see through the initiatives we’ve started.”
Pedraja said he is excited about the new MassReconnect program, which offers free community college education for Massachusetts residents age 25 and older, and for the possibility of free community college for all students, something he is discussing with legislators.
Pedraja has served as president of QCC since 2017. He was named a Business Leader of the Year by WBJ in 2021 and was named to WBJ’s Power 50 in 2022 for the influence on the future of Worcester’s workforce as the leader of QCC.
