QCC Plans Marlborough Expansion

Quinsigamond Community College will begin offering a variety of educational and job training programs in Marlborough this fall, with a specific focus on preparing students for work in green industries.

QCC President Gail Carberry announced at an event in Marlborough this afternoon that the school has partnered with Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School to offer courses at the high school's campus starting in September.

QCC hopes to offer a one-year certificate program in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) services, as well as a non-credit program focusing on photovoltaic and solar studies.

The school will also offer its joint business-themed programs with Dudley-based Nichols College at the site. That program allows students to receive a baccalaureate degree after taking three years worth of courses at QCC and a fourth year at Nichols. That same program is offered at QCC's Worcester and Southbridge campuses.

QCC will also offer general education courses in Marlborough.

Carberry said in a telephone interview that school official have spent the last few months studying market trends in MetroWest and speaking with business and municipal leaders about the needs in the community.

Classes will be held in the afternoons and evening, which Carberry said is a direct result of feedback school officials received. The school wants the curriculum to accommodate working-age adults as well as college-aged students.

There are not yet estimates of how many students the school expects to serve in Marlborough. The number of students who enroll will dictate how many classes are offered. Based on the program's success, QCC could expand to offer additional courses from the location in the future, Carberry said.

"It will be a matter of measuring the interest as we go based on enrollment gains and hopefully we can expand the services even more," she said.

Carberry made the announcement at a lunch meeting of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce in Marlborough Tuesday afternoon.

QCC officials announced in the spring plans to explore an expansion in Marlborough.
